Misc

Sir Niles Sebastio Armanti Gray was born the third son of His Excellency Damion Gray of Arlea, and their fourth child overall, having a single elder sister. In his youth, Niles lived happily and well on his familyÕs money, enjoying the best toys, tutors and playmates that their substantial moneys and status could provide.

Thus it was that he learned early that in order for him to get by in the world, all he truly needed was to rely on his boyish good looks, his natural skill with people, and his money, in that order. His early life was happy, for the most part, to re-enforce this lesson, time and again, until he was ready to leave for college.

His application was rejected.

The Imperial Navy, with its nobility, its history, its prestige and tradition, then, seemed like an admirable alternative. The neatly typed letter of rejection they returned to him referred to him as ÒCallow, weak-willed, and flighty.Ó With such a frank evaluation of his abilities, Niles knew of only one option left open to him.

He returned home and immersed himself in the lifestyle of a wealthy noble.

The next thirteen years of his life passed slowly, though not totally without incident. He tried to narrow his fields of study to areas other than fencing, horses, and women, but little else, it seemed, could hold his attention as well. It was the bestowal of Knighthood upon him, at age 22, that helped him to find direction in his life.

The seamy, seething world of diplomacy and politics was like a dream come true for the man that Niles had become. A world where money, power, and prestige were everything. Where his looks and charm gave him an ÒedgeÓ over his associates. Where family and rank mattered far more than education and accomplishment. The new Sir Gray was swept away, and threw himself with passion into his new life, and proved an ample student, expanding his knowledge daily.

It was not to last however, and political scandal raised itÕs ugly head less than a decade later. Although family moneys on both sides worked to keep it a secret, occasional words leaked out. AmbassadorÕs Wife, Scandalous, and Guest Room, being the most common ones, and leaving the rest to the fertile imagination of the vulgar masses.

Niles thought it best to leave Arlea then, to pay tribute to the sense of wanderlust that gnawed within his breast. With very little ado, he signed on, disguised, as a crewmember on a merchant ship plying the core worlds. And despite his efforts to the contrary, learned some things about himself in space. He learned the merchanting and brokering was the Great Game, watered down for ease of consumption by the common folk. He learned that when negotiating, good looks and self-confidence are everything. And he learned that Zero-Gee is not his ideal element, even after repeated exposures. At the end of his four-year contract, he returned to his Birthright on Arlea.

The scandal had died down and been replaced, for there is always some new scandal waiting in the wings to entice the people. His family was doing well, and his oldest brother was being carefully groomed for the title that would one day pass to him. Niles was in the Game again, this time for good, his wanderlust sated.

This time, she was an ambassadorÕs daughter.

After avoiding immediate capture by the local guards, Sir Gray found that that sense of adventure hadnÕt quite left him yet, and in fact he felt that a return to the joys of deep space might be a wonderful change of scenery. He grabbed what belongings he could carry, and armed with his own impressive bank account, slipped as quietly as he could to the spaceport.

He found what he needed, a 300tonne merchant, preparing to leave as soon as exit visas were granted, and offered his services as financier. The crew was leery of him at first, but a generous donation to the shipÕs coffers, and another one as a trust fund for the ailing daughter of the port official who expedited there exit visas, and he was welcomed aboard.

It was only after leaving orbit that he learned the shipÕs name to be Bounty...
