A native of Arlea, Artemus was born in a fishing port, where he spent much of his early life in boats. The town was old by Arlean standards and he developed an interest in antiquities. He subsequently won a scholarship to the Arlean Central Institute of Arts and Sciences, majoring in Art History & Archaeology.

While still an undergraduate, he performed in several amateur dramas and occasionally played the flute in musical groups of various kinds. As part of his archaeological studies, he learned several crafts useful in understanding and copying artifacts.

Graduating with honors, Artemus pursued graduate work in archaeology, writing his thesis on the jewelry of the First Imperium and his dissertation on the earliest known computers.

While completing his PhD, he was recruited by the Planetary Criminal Investigation Service, Art & Antiquities Crimes Division. Artemus' potential was soon recognized and promotion followed. His crowning achievement was as head of a team that broke up a group of smugglers specializing in unusual ancient devices of uncertain provenance and function. At the time of his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel, he was the head of a special squad, art & antiquities fraud squad.

His hobbies are music, drama and building reconstructions of ancient devices.
