Determine word length (1D6 syllables). 2. Determine syllable structure with 2 1D6 rolls. Use the BASIC syllable type table if FIRST syllable in a word. Otherwise, use the ALTERNATE table. 3. When the syllables have been generated, roll another 1D6. If that roll is 1 or 2, add the FINAL CONSONANT. 4. Determine ALL CONSONANTS called for in the above tables from column 1; VOWELS from column 2; the FINAL CONSONANT (if any) from column 3. 1 CONSONANTS VOWELS FINAL CONSONANT - 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 ----------------------- ---------------------- ---------------------- 1 D D D D D D A A A A A A D D D D D D 2 D D D D D D A A A A A A D D D D D D 3 F F F F F F A A A A A A D D D F F F 4 F F F F F F A A A A A A F F F F F F 5 G G G G G G A A A A A A G G G G G G 6 GH GH GH GH GH GH AA AA AA AA AA AA GH GH GH GH GH GH 2 - 1 H H H H H H AE AE AE AE AE AE GH GH GH GH GH GH 2 HZ HZ HZ HZ HZ HZ E E E E E E H H H H H H 3 J J J J J J E E E E E E HZ HZ HZ HZ HZ HZ 4 JJ JJ JJ JJ JJ JJ E E E E E E J J J J J J 5 JZ JZ JZ JZ JZ JZ E E E E E E JJ JJ JJ JZ JZ JZ 6 K K K K K K EE EE EE EE EE EE JZ JZ JZ K K K 3 - 1 K K K KK KK KK I I I I I I K K K K K K 2 KK KK KL KL KL KL I I I I I I K K K KK KK KK 3 KL KS KS KS KS KS I I I I I I KK KK KK KK KK KK 4 KZ KZ KZ KZ KZ L I I I I I I KS KS KS KS KS KS 5 L L L L L L I I I I I I KS KS KS KZ KZ KZ 6 LL LL LL M M M II II II II II II KZ KZ KZ KZ KZ KZ 4 - 1 M M M N N N II II II II II II L L L L L L 2 N N N Q Q Q II II II O O O L L LL LL LL LL 3 Q Q Q Q Q Q O O O O O O M M M M M M 4 R R R R RR RR O O O O O O N N N N N N 5 RR RR RR RR RS RS O O O O O O Q Q Q Q Q Q 6 RS RZ RZ RZ S S O O O O O O Q Q Q R R R 5 - 1 S S S S SS SS OU OU OU OU OU OU R R R R R R 2 SS SS SS SS SS SS U U U U U U RR RR RR RR RR RR 3 TH TH TH TH TH TH U U U U U U RS RS RS RS RS RS 4 TH TH TH TR TR TR U U U U U U RZ RZ RZ RZ RZ RZ 5 TR TR X X X X U U U U U U SS SS SS SS SS SS 6 X X X X X X UE UE UE UE UE UE SS SS SS SS SS SS 6 - 1 X X X XX XX XX UE UE UE UE UE UE TH TH TH TH TH TH 2 XX XX XX XX XX XX UU UU UU UU UU UU X X X X X X 3 XX XX XX Z Z Z UU UU UU UU Y Y XX XX XX XX XX XX 4 Z Z Z ZZ ZZ ZZ Y Y Y YU YU YU Z Z Z Z Z Z 5 ZZ ZZ ZZ ' ' ' YY YY YY * * * Z Z Z ZZ ZZ ZZ 6 ' ' ' ' ' ' * * * * * * ZZ ZZ ZZ ZZ ZZ ZZ A NOTE ON SPECIAL CHARACTERS USED The vowel character "*" is a special character representing a sound in Ithklur which is not easily pronounced by humans. The "'" is reproduced by itself as a human glottal stop. The "*" is sometimes referred to as a `glottal stop-tee' and may be found written as "'t'". A word result containing "'*" (or "''t'") is called a `double glottal stop-tee'. Similarly, many of the consonant clusters, i.e. HZ, JJ, JZ, KZ, XX or ZZ, are simply un-pronounceable by any speaker that has a tounge less than eight inches in length. The doubled consonants, for a human or Ithklur speaker have a sound about three times the length of the same single consonant's sound. SAMPLE ITHKLUR WORD In the following example, the red die refers to vertical slices of the component tables, while the white die refers to horizontal slices. Step 1: To generate an Ithklur word, a roll of 1D6 for the number of syllables is made, result of 2. Steps 2/4: For the first syllable, the red die is 3 and the white die is 4, meaning construction VC is used from the BASIC table. Subsequently, the ALTERNATE table is consulted for a red die of 2 and a white die of 1, meaning use of construction CV is called for. Actually, this is automatic since all of the subsequent syllables are of construction CV. Consulting the letter tables for the first syllable, VC , a die throw of 3, followed by a red die of 2 and white die of 3 produces the letter "I" from the VOWEL table. For the CONSONANT, a die throw of 5, followed by a red die of 3 and a white die of 5 produces the letters "TH". The first syllable is "ITH". For the last syllable, CV, the CONSONANT table is consulted with a die throw of 3, followed by a red die of 3 and a white die of 1 produces the letter "KL". Then, the VOWEL table is consulted with a die throw of 5, followed by a red die of 5 and a white die of 4 producing the letter "U". Step 3/4: Having completed the rolls for the two syllables, we determine whether or not to consult the FINAL CONSONANT table. A 1D6 roll is made which is 2, so we must add a FINAL CONSONANT to the end of the word. We roll a 4, followed by a red die of 6 and a white die of 5 produces the letter "R". The second syllable is "KLUR". Combining the two syllables, we have the Ithklur word "ITHKLUR" meaning people or the people. DISTRIBUTION This language table (among many others) may also be found in the program TrWords, available to the public domain. When available, it will be in the GEnie RoundTable library for Traveller and ftp sites around the world.
