Our campaign uses TNE rules and occurs just after the 5th Frontier War. The Darrians are a minor human race ruling most of a subsector allied with the Imperium in the Spinward Marches. Their low-gravity home world has developed to a tall, thin race (STR 1D6+2). Anyone can have a 10mm snub pistol. What good is an alien without making him somewhat different? The weapon described below is issued to officers in the Darrian Space Navy. It has been nicknamed "deolen" (Darrian for a mechanical blower or fan). Additional weapons are carried shipboard for issue as needed as autopistols are carried in imperial space. While a bit awkward due to its size, the deolen produces a fair amount of damage at shipboard ranges without a lot of recoil - which suits the thin Darrian frame. The weapon's comparatively low power limits damage done to ship interiors. The 26 cm barrel is required to provide a 4 meter short range, which was deemed acceptable for shipboard combat. It can quickly clear a ship corridors (or other enclosed space) of unwanted guests. It has a selector for SA or 4-rd burst. It is designed for one-hand use and is equipped with a TL10 Gyrocompensator for ease of use in Zero-G. In some acquisition runs, the Gyrocompensator has replaced by a .1 kg adapter plug due to budgetary demands. These deolen can be easily retrofitted with Gyrocompensators bought as spare parts. Most of the time, the weapon is carried in a suitably large, impressive holster. Rich officers buy well-tooled or embellished leather holsters. The deolen's large holster is easily the most prominent part of the Darrian naval uniform. Young Darrian officers visiting Imperial space often explain to local women that the weapon's concept is inspired by a certain racial characteristic. While general DSN equipment is at TL14, this weapon can be manufactured at TL10. The HE and HEAP ammo is manufactured at TL14 (limited amounts are manufactured at TL16 for use by the Darrian Special Service). The Darrians tend to use 8- or 12-pellet shot (depending on the military budget that year). A folding stock, a longer barrel, and a larger clip can be added for a more stable, more powerful, and better ranged weapon in less than five minutes. Originally fitted with a grip magazine that held six shells, it was re-engineered with a box magazine port just in from of the trigger guard. The change allowed for more flexibility in magazine size. This is extremely useful for its conversion to a long arm. While they are allies, the Darrians and the Imperium are not close enough to need or use inter-operable ammunition. The TL10-14 ammo is (military issue) in Darrian Space and quite rare in Imperial space. The TL16 explosive ammo is unavailable outside of the Darrian Special Service. Imperial marine officers derisively refer to the deolen as a "vermin gun" good only for removing rats from engine spaces. But they have never tried to maintain a ship for 20 centuries. Nor have they faced a deolen in combat. The weapon has been in use by the Darrian Navy for a few centuries. For those of you running in the Regency, there is still no reason for the Darrians to have given up this weapon as a sidearm. DSN Shipboard Sidearm (Deolen) Type: Long Pistol (35 cm barrel!)
