In the transition from Traveller to Megatraveller, or in errors in the process of further documenting one or the other of the above, several of the major worlds in the game have shifted positions. Fortunately, none have moved out of their original sector boundaries. Here I provide the list of World UWP data that should be used as CANON for the Traveller universe. System/Subsector/Sector Position UPP (CT) Notes Star(s) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Capital/Core/Core 2118 A586A98-F + Imperial capital {G2 V} Glea/Liana/Centrax 2619 A6678T4-F Hiver capital G0 V Guaran/Drax/Ricenden 0827 A5658T1-F Hiver homeworld K1 V Kirur/Kirarurr!ka/Ruupiin 1315 B863AR3-F K'kree homeworld {F1 V} Kusyu/Kilrai'/I'aheako 1919 A8769H6-E + Aslan homeworld G4 V DA Lair/Grnouf/Orraenang 2402 A8859B9-F Vargr homeworld G5 V Loza'tch/Za'tachk/Wrenton 2330 A664AW7-A Za'tachk homeworld K2 V Ofilaq/Aghan/Folgore 0305 A946823-B Gurvin homeworld F9 V Terra/Sol/Solomani Rim 1827 A867A69-F Humaniti homeworld G2 V Tryylin/Kse'i/Extolian 2514 AA87865-A Ithklur homeworld F2 V Vland/Vland/Vland 1717 A967A9A-F Vilani homeworld F8 V Zhdant/Zhdant/Zhdant 2719 A6547C8-F Zhodani homeworld K0 V Human reference data -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Glea/Liana/Centrax 2619 A667800-F Hiver capital G0 V Guaran/Hive/Ricenden 0827 A565800-F Hiver homeworld K1 V Kirur/Thirty/Ruupiin 1315 B863A03-F K'kree homeworld {F1 V} Kuzu/Kilane/Dark Nebula 1919 A876986-E + Aslan homeworld G4 V DA Loza'tch/Za'tachk/Wrenton 2330 A664A30-A Za'tachk homeworld K2 V Ofilaq/Aghan/Folgore 0305 A946840-B Gurvin homeworld F9 V Tryylin/Kse'i/Extolian 2514 AA87869-A Ithklur homeworld F2 V Zhodane/Gaval/Zhodane 2719 A6547C8-F Zhodani homeworld K0 V + note: the UWP data commonly floating around says this star is a red dwarf (plus white dwarf in Kusyu's case) Distances in parsecs (Re = Regina/Regina/Spinward Marches) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Ca Gl Gu Ki Ku La Lo Of Re Te Tr Vl Zh Ca - 188 163 152 154 126 213 194 185 131 142 59 249 Gl 188 - 39 174 199 314 29 41 301 136 46 247 376 Gu 163 39 - 135 213 289 50 31 277 150 21 222 365 Ki 152 174 135 - 273 213 180 171 282 250 129 188 370 Ku 154 199 213 273 - 219 228 240 153 63 197 177 276 La 126 314 289 213 219 - 339 320 82 254 268 45 157 Lo 213 29 50 180 228 339 - 31 326 165 71 272 401 Of 194 41 31 171 240 320 31 - 307 177 52 253 392 Re 185 301 277 282 153 82 326 307 - 241 262 94 88 Te 131 136 150 250 63 254 165 177 241 - 135 187 316 Tr 142 46 21 129 197 268 71 52 262 135 - 201 350 Vl 59 247 222 188 177 45 272 253 94 187 201 - 249 Zh 308 376 365 370 276 157 401 392 88 316 350 249 - Ca - Capital, Gl - Glea, Gu - Guaran, Ki - Kirur, Ku - Kuzu, La - Lair, Lo - Loza'tch, Of - Ofilaq, Re - Regina, Te - Terra, Tr - Tryylin, Vl - Vland, Zh - Zhodane Capital/Core/Core (Capital/Core 0508-A586A98-F): Central world of the Imperium and seat of government since its founding. Situated in the center of the Imperium, Capital's astrographical position has proven of prime importance, as a communications hub, a cultural center, and an industrial focus. [CT S8 p.17] (Core 2118): This equates to G-0508 which matches well with the earlier CT source. [CT AOI p.15] (Capital/Core 0508-A586A98-A): Hard to believe the Imperium's Capital world Tech Level dropped so far after Digest Group took over. [CT TD#8 p.34] Capital (Core/Capital 2118-A586A98-F): As CT S8 above, adding: Under the divided Imperium, with no emporor officially proclaimed by action of the Moot, Capital is a head without a brain, and the separate domains of teh Imperium have been forced to fend for themselves under the independent leadership of the local archdukes. Once the current political turmoil has settled down and the Imperium is reunited, Capital will again take its place as the centerpiece of human civilization. [MT IE p.20] Imperial Sunburst: The symbol of the Third Imperium ... [is] a golden yellow sunburst against a black background, representing Capital's type G star against dark space. Combine this with several sources that pin the standard Imperial day to nearly that of Earth's, and you must conclude it is a G2 V star. Personally, I had thought about making it a G5 IV subgiant, but the habitable zone is in orbit 5, while the year would dictate orbit 4. [MT IE p.28-29] CONCLUSION: The MT 2118 position agrees with the CT source if you put Capital at G-0508 (agreeing also with CT TD8). Glea/Liana/Centrax (Glea/Liana 0209-A667800-F): Main coordinating center of the Hive Federation since 410. Center of the Glean cluster, an unusually rich grouping of 16 Hiver-habitable worlds, mutually accessible by jump-1 shipping. [CT S8 p.28] On the map of the Hiver Federation, the star sighting Glea appears in subsector H of Centrax, which strongly suggests a sector position of (Centrax 2619) when combined with the above. [CT AM7 inside back cover] Glea (Centrax/Glea 2609-A667800-F): As CT S8 above. [MT IE p.25] CONCLUSION: The location of Glea SHOULD be 2619 and NOT 2609 as was the revision in Megatraveller. * Guaran/Hive/Ricendan (Guaran/Hive 0307-A565800-F): Homeworld of the Hivers. Guaran has no special political importance, although it attracts millions of tourists annually from all over the Federation. [CT S8 p.28] On the map of K'Kree space, the star sighting Guaran appears in subsector J of Ricenden (Gnoghikt!) not agreeing with the above. However, even the star sighting Kirur does not match the published position, though it is in the correct subsector. [CT AM2 inside back cover] On the map of the Hiver Federation, the star sighting Guaran appears in subsector I of Ricenden, which strongly suggests a sector position of (Ricenden 0827). [CT AM7 inside back cover] Guaran (Ricenden/Guaran 0827-A565800-F): As CT S8 above. [MT IE p.25] CONCLUSION: The location of Guaran SHOULD be 0827 agreeing with the the revision in Megatraveller. * * A format change for listing systems and their UWP data occured in the early days of MT. As a result, a literal reading of the Imperial Encyclopedia would imply that Core subsector (Capital/Core) is now Capital subsector, Hive subsector (Guaran/Hive) is now Guaran subsector and Liana subsector (Glea/Liana) is now Glea subsector. However, if one carefully examines all of the entries in the IE where world formats are shown, only these three worlds have had the subsector named to the same as the world name. I consider non-canonical and merely a production error, of which MT had plenty. Kirur/Thirty/Ruupiin (Kirur/Thirty 0505-B863A03-F: Homeworld and capital of the Two Thousand Worlds--the interstellar empire of the K'Kree. The planet's oceans are extremely shallow and the world exhibits almost no volcanic activity, very unusual for a world of its size. Kirur has one large continent, which was conquered in prehistoric times by the current ruling clan; Kirur is one of the most politically stable planets known. [CT S8 p.34] Kirur (Ruupiin/Thirty 1315-B863A03-F: As CT S8 above. [MT IE p.30] I could find no references to Kirur's star except the usual indirect kind. Kirur's orbital period is 440 standard days. The implied mass for its central star(s) would be 1.66 standard solar masses. If you interpolate the stellar tables, this amounts to an F1 V star. [CT AM2 p.2] CONCLUSION: The MT 1315 position agrees with the CT source if you put Kirur at F-0505. Kusyu/Kilrai'/Dark Nebula (Kuzu/Kilane 0406-A876986-E): Homeworld of the Aslan race and capital of the Aslan Hierate. [CT S8 p.34] (Kusyu/Dark Nebula 1919): This equates to G-0309 which does not match the earlier CT source. [CT AOI p.34] Kusyu's two stars are Tyeyo, a G4 V star, and Saietaie, a DA white dwarf in close orbit to the primary star. Also, detailed world stats may be found here. [CT AM1 p.35] Kusyu (Dark Nebula/Kilrai' 1919-A8769H6-E): Revised for Aslan government types and an Aslan spelling, this is at least compatible with the last CT source. The sector listing did however show Kusyu's star to be an M1 V/ DM9 pair. [MT TD#17 p.32] In the Aslan homeworld write-up in Solomani & Aslan, the stellar data matches that of AM1 above. [MT S&A p.47] However, the sector UWP data list matches the TD17 entry above. [MT S&A p.103] CONCLUSION: Unfortunately, Atlas revised the Supplement 8: Library Data entry. At least Megatraveller did no more relocation of the Aslan homeworld. Dark Nebula 1919 has become CANON. Lair/Grnouf/Provence (Lair/Grnouf 0802-A8859B9-F): "Homeworld" and capital of the Vargr Extents. Unusually enough for the capital of a star-spanning empire, several sections of the planet still boasted independence from central control only a few years ago. [CT S8 p.34] Lair (Provence/Grnouf 2402-A8859B9-F): "Homeworld" and capital of the Vargr Extents. Lair has never been accorded any particular status in the hearts and minds of the Vargr race, unlike Terra, Vland, Zhodane, Kuzu or Kirur. Lair was only recently united; several sections of the planet had boasted independence until only a few years ago--which is unusual for the homeworld of a major interstellar race. [MT IE p.31] CONCLUSION: The MT 2402 position agrees with the CT source if you put Lair at C-0802. Terra/Sol/Solomani Rim (Terra/Sol 0207-A867A69-F): Also known as Earth. Origin world of the genetic stock from which all races of Humaniti descended, former capital of the Terran Confederation, former capital of the Old Earth Union, and former capital of the Solomani Autonomous Region. The word Terran (used in the past to refer to an inhabitant of this world or to a citizen of the Terran Confederation) is derived from the name of this world. [CT S11 p.24] (Solomani Rim 1827): Terra. [CT AOI p.36] Terra (Solomani Rim/Sol 1827-A867A69-F): As CT S11 above, discarding "Also known as ". [MT IE p.41] CONCLUSION: The MT 1827 position agrees with the CT source if you put Terra at K-0207 (agreeing also with CT S10). Vland/Vland/Vland (Vland/Vland 0307-A967A9A-F): Homeworld of the Vilani, former capital of the Vilani Imperium, current capital of the Vland sector, and major trade and manufacturing center for the core/spinward regions of the Imperium. [CT S11 p.30] (Vland 1717): Vland. [CT AOI p.7] Vland (Vland/Vland 1717-A967A9A-F): As CT S11 above, inserting after "current capital of Vland sector, " and current capital of the so-called Restored Vilani Empire or Ziru Sirka. Vland has been a major trade ... [MT IE p.46] CONCLUSION: The MT 1717 position disagrees with the CT source putting Vland at G-0107, at least two parsecs from the original position. Vland 1717 has become CANON. Zhdant/Gaval/Zhdant (Zhodane/Gaval 0309-A6547C8-F): Capital of the Zhodani Consulate [and] homeworld of the Zhodani people. Unlike the capitals of other empires, Zhodane is largely divided into the estates of the members of the ruling Zhodani council, making the world's population unusually low. The Zhodani call the world Zhdant. [CT S11 p.31] Zhdant (Zhdant 2719-A6547C8-F): As CT S11 above switching Zhdant for Zhodane, and adding: Zhdant is often spelled "Zhodane" in Anglic texts. [MT IE p.46] CONCLUSION: The MT 2719 position agrees with the CT source if you put Zhdant at H-0309. SYSTEM/SUBSECTOR/SECTOR Naming above with UPP Data I have prepared two listings. One should be considered the standard data listing that you would have in a direct contact with the world in question, assuming access to that data. The second, would be considered the Imperial Survey standard listing, with classifications and names that would be more recognizable to humans and/or Imperials. I generated Kirur's "Thirty" subsector, and the various Hiver references, the Vargr home sector of Provence/Orraenang, and finally the Zhodani home subsector. Names for the Aslan home sector/subsector, Zhodani home sector, and Vargr home subsector have already appeared in print. Where there is not a decidely human name, it is assumed that the Imperials had no reason to use another. DISTANCE TABLE I wrote a program that calculates the hex-to-hex distance between two points on maps which use a hex grid of 32 by 40 parsecs. It was soon discovered that the program was adaptable to distances between systems in the Traveller universe, as well as its other applications. So, I created the distance table for a reference.
