L-Hyd tanks: Drop tanks can make radical changes in ship performance.

The ship listing should indicate ship performance without drop tanks

installed, and without the extra fuel tank capacity. On an additional listing

line, make the comment that L-Hyd tanks are fitted, with specification of

total drop tank tonnage. The revised performance portion of the UCP should

show ship tonnage and performance while burdened with the drop tanks.



      Lalendrians: Minor race from Lalendriss (K'righeek).



      Lancia: Minor human race from Irkhi/Taapvaiai (Gushemege 2207). They

were subjugated by the Vilani during the Consolidation Wars, and have resented

Vilani influences since.



      Languljigee: Minor race from Lajanjigal/Drexilthar (Reaver's Deep 1721).



      Lanthanum: A rare earth element, the first of the inner transition

metals. Vital to the construction of the inner coils of interstellar jump

drive units.



      Larianz: Minor race on Byret/Mora (Spinward Marches 2523).



      Lasers: fire concentrated light energy in beams or pulses against enemy

targets and cause damage to exterior surfaces. Pulse lasers fire short

bursts of energy at targets, and are more effective at inflicting damage than

are beam lasers. Beam lasers fire continuous beams of energy at targets, and

are more effective at hitting than are pulse lasers.



      Laskan, Professor Chanis: Professor of History with Degrees in Vilani

History and Linguistics. Author of Discourses on Comparative Linguisto-

Archeologocal Discoveries (1096), The First Imperium: Expansion and

Consolidation (1100), The First Imperium: The Long Peace (1105), and The First

Imperium: Watershed and Decline (1110).



      Launch: This unarmed 20-ton vessel is intended for small, routine

errands. It is capable of 1G acceleration. Two crew members sit in the bridge.

Once tonnage requirements for drives, bridge, and fuel are met, there are

thirteen tons left. Usually, six passenger couches have been installed, and

the remaining ten tons left for cargo space.



      Levanex: A high-tech fabric available at tech-level 12. This light,

tough fabric is impossible to rip. It can be made into a fairly efficient one-

way vapor barrier. A special stretch variation ("levanex-R") is available.



      Lifeboat: This unarmed 20-ton vessel can carry two conscious passengers

(including the pilot), six emergency low berths, 3 tons of cargo, and five

tons of fuel. The large fuel capacity is carried for endurance and survival

reserve. A combination of extremely simple controls allow even the most

inexperienced small craft pilot a good chance of a safe landing.



      Lisiani, Arian: Awarded SEH posthumously. There has been a ship in the

Imperial Navy named for her since 345.



      Ling-Standard Products: Imperial megacorporation. LSP maintains mining,

manufacturing, and transportation operations throughout the Imperium and

beyond. Its spectrum of products includes ground and air vehicles, starships,

starship weaponry, drive systems, power systems, computers, software, small

arms, and all manner of electronic equipment.

      It began as a mining and mineral exploitation firm. Later it expanded

into manufacturing to create markets for its raw materials. It now transports

raw materials and finished goods throughout the Imperium and approximately 50

parsecs beyond the Imperial borders.

      Interests: Mining, electronics, vehicles, weapons, consumer goods.

      Stock ownership: Imperial family, 8%; Hortalez et Cie, 26%; GSbAG, 23%;

Murdoch Holdings LIC, 8%; Noble families, 8%; Other, 27%.



      Llellewyloly: Minor race on Junidy/Aramis (Spinward Marches 3202).



      Loeskalth: Minor human race, known only from First Imperium records

(homeworld in Gushemege M).



      Lowalaa: A bird traditionally symbolizing trust, caring, and loyalty.

They are common pets, especially among the nobility, in the Imperial region

from Delphi to the thumbs of the Great Rift.
