J'aadje: Minor race on Gaajpadje/Ea (Reaver's Deep 1124). Jessa: Minor race on Galatea/Inverness (Far Frontiers 3228). Jgd-Il-Jagd: Minor race from Jagd/Sotri (Lishun 2307). The most technologically advanced gas-giant race in charted space: tech level 13. Jonkeereen: Subspecies of humaniti genetically altered for living on desert planets. [See entry in Deneb sector file.] Jump: Movement of matter from one point in space (called normal space) to another point in normal space by travelling through an alternate space (called jumpspace.) Minimum mass for entry into jumpspace is 100 tons. Maximum theoretical (and practical) distance limit is six parsecs. The benefit of jump is that the time required is relatively invariant - about one week. Normal jumps take 168 hours (plus or minus 10 percent) to complete, regardless of distance travelled. If the distance travelled is greater than can be covered in one week in normal space, then a gain has been made. Entering jump is possible anywhere, but gravity perturbations make it safest to begin a jump at least 100 diameters from a star or a world. Ships naturally precipitate out of jumpspace before they get too deep into a gravity field. Jump drive: A mechanism used to move the carrying vessel into jumpspace and to a predetermined destination. Drives are rated in terms of the distance they can carry a ship: a jump-1 drive can move a starship up to one parsec. Ratings depend on tech level, and can not exceed 6. Jumpship: a ship design where the ship consists of engines and crew quarters. Cargo or self-contained transportation modules are attached externally. LSP uses this configuration widely. Since most LSP cargos are durable goods, it fits their needs for an adaptable, multi-purpose craft. LSP's TL 15 jump-6 jumpships are common on many xboat routes. Jumpspace: The basic concept is that of an alternate space. Theoretically, jumpspaces are alternate spaces, each only dimly understood from our own universe's standpoint. Jumpspace Institute: Originally established at Deneb to investigate interstellar jump drives. Financed originally by the Duke of Deneb, the Institute has since become an arm of the sector government. Programs include training for starship engineers and naval architects. Jump Troops: Specially trained units assigned to planetary invasions. They are lightly-armed infantry, generally equipped with battle dress and whatever support weapons can be man-carried.
