treatment.



      Igsiirdi: Ruling council of the Ziru Sirkaa, which selects a new

Ishimkarun. Members are elected by the three Vilani megacorporations.



      Illuminati: Secret conspiracy supposed to have controlled Terran

history. According to some Vilani groups, it controlled the Rule of Man and

influences the Third Imperium. There is no factual basis for its existence.



      Ilraki: Minor race native to Gasha/Arar (Massilia 1508).



      Ilthara: Minor race from Drexilthar/Derexilthar (Reaver's Deep 2618).



      Imperial Academy of Science and Medicine: Founded in 341 by Imperial

Decree. By 950, branch campuses existed on 31 worlds throughout the Imperium.

The Academy is known and respected beyond the Imperium's borders.



      Imperial Ministry of Justice (MOJ): Primarily concerned with Imperial

society; it has contacts with the court systems of the Imperium's worlds. It

also has an intelligence network which concentrates on criminal activity.



      Imperial Naval Intelligence: It can draw on the entire assets of the

Imperial Navy, and is primarily concerned with military intelligence. It

tracks starship and troop operations, and can mount intelligence-gathering

activities into all parts of the Imperium.



      Imperial Science Union: In 841 the Imperial Academy of Science and

Medicine and numerous other educational, governmental, and commercial

organizations founded the Imperial Science Union. The ISU is dedicated to

research inside and outside the Imperium. It operates laboratories on over 30

worlds and over 100 starships.



      Imperial Sylean University: The traditional school for the Imperial

family and most higher noble families. The university is one of the most

prestigious in the Imperium.



      Instellarms, LIC: This firm is a specialty supplier of all sizes and

types of mercenary units. It manufactures, buys, and sells military equipment.

It does not deal in interstellar vessels, or in chemical, biological, or

nuclear weapons.

      In 626, Axel Murdoch, a retired Mercenary colonel, founded Instellarms.

Using inside contacts in the Imperium military, Murdoch obtained large

quantities of surplus military equipment at very low prices, but still paid

billions of credits. Where he got his financing is unknown.

      Instellarms dominated the mercenary arms trade in the Imperium's

coreward sectors within 90 years, and in the whole Imperium in 200. Murdoch's

connections helped, but a willingness to ignore even the Imperial regulations

on mercenary warfare gave Instellarms its decisive edge over its competition.

      Interests: Military hardware, military units, strategic planning.

      Stock ownership: Murdoch Holdings, 6%; Hortalez et Cie, 30%; Sternmetal

Horizons, 8%; Ling-Standard Products, 6%; GSbAG, 5%; Ichiban Interstellar LIC,

5%; Noble families, 8%; other, 6%.



                  Irdu: Minor, psionic race on Ishirdu/Two Worlds (Corridor 0338).



      Irhadre: Minor human race that keeps half its population in ritual

slavery. (Believed to be in Lishun.)



      Irklan (religious sect): A human religious sect from the desert

highlands of Menorb (Regina 0203 - C652998-7). Members enjoy an awesome

reputation throughout the subsector (and beyond) as masters of stealth,

unarmed combat, and rigorous control of their bodies and their minds. 

      The sect stresses personal survival and individual prowess in hand-to-

hand combat. It believes too much technology makes one soft and incapable.



      Ironite: a plaster with many metal-like properties. Available and used

at tech level 10.



      Ishimaga Genealogical Society: Members of this group are proud of the

high percentage of Vilani blood flowing through their veins. Potential members

are carefully screened, both genealogically and biologically, to ensure that

they qualify by their racial purity.

      The IGS was formed sometime during the Long Night, but its early history

is not too well known. Offices of the IGS can be found throughout the

Imperium, with headquarters at Ishimaga (Lishun 0101).



      Ishimkarun: Vilani word, translated as Shadow Emperor.



      Ishuggi: Archduke of Vland, and now Ishimkarun of the Ziru Sirkaa, the

Restored Vilani Empire. As Ishimkarun, Ishuggi rules in the traditional Vilani

manner - by proclamation.



      Issugur: Low-tech minor human race on Parthinia/Foreven.



      Ithklur: Minor race from Tryylin/Sub H (Extolian ?).



      Iystyos: An inexpensive intoxicant popular with Aslan spaceship crews.

The grain from which it is brewed is native to Kusyu and has been imported to

almost every Aslan world where it could be grown. The brew often causes

hallucinations in humans who are unwary enough to try it.
