Earleatrais: ("Referee") One appointed from a neutral clan to oversee a clan war between other clans. The appointment is an enormous honor for the clan receiving it, and referees act with scrupulous objectivity, trying to salvage honor and pride for both sides. Easmolian Confederation: A small, multi-planet state on the fringes of the Imperium. Capital is Easmolia. Eayerkiye': Aslan term meaning "temporary crew" or "mercenary." Ebokin: Minor race native to Yebab/Aramis (Spinward Marches 3002). Echtovr Dazhia: Zhodani expression translated as Ambitious Enterprise. Eldorado: The Imperial cruiser Eldorado misjumped into the center of the Great Rift in 986. The crew was surprised to discover two subsectors inhabited by Terrans using sleeper ships. The Eldorado eventually returned to the Imperium with the news. The IISS has worked with the individual worlds since then. Eliyoh: A non-human minor race who joined the Imperium in 247. Their vision is centered in the far infrared. Emperor's Games: Held every ten years in Paulo's Annex on Capitol. Athletes gather from around the Imperium. Emperor's Guard, Order of: Common Imperial order of knighthood. Cleon II founded it in 52. Originally limited to the Emperor's personal retinue, but now of wide and diver membership. Empire: Group of independent states, duchies, nations, tribes, worlds, or systems under the supreme rule of an emperor. Energy weapons: fire a highly energized beam of ionized gas at the target. With the fusion gun, this gas actually proceeds to fusion. Energy weapons cause surface damage. Escorts: Small ships up to 5000 tons displacement. Meant to be light support craft for cruisers and larger craft. Widely used for convoy protection and commerce raiding roles. Eshaar Ashah: Minor race on Eshaar/Taemerlyk (Far Frontiers 1826). Eskayloyt: The name of the lost Droyne homeworld. Estigarribia, Hiroshi: Founder of the Rule of Man. Known to history as Emperor Hiroshi I. Esoth: A draysask to whom Yaskoydray entrusted development of Terran canine stock. His work resulted in development of the Vargr race. Ethueng: Anticipating the Kforuzeng would disband, Tukera Lines encouraged a major group to split off in 1115, and transferred its dealings for protection to them. The relationship between Ethueng and Tukera is remarkably close. The Ethueng prey on other Imperial traders in Vargr space competing with Tukera, particularly Oberlindes lines. Eugeria: normal and happy old age. Exile Camp: A location committed to the containment of individuals guilty (or presumed guilty) of political crimes of discontent. Government controls are usually restricted to the retention of the inmate, and a general oppression of the population. Express boat: Interstellar message or data carrier. Express boats attempts to reduce the information lag time between systems by relaying messages to succeeding boats with minimal delay between jumps. Use of express boats becomes important as the interstellar community becomes larger. The Imperial approach is typical. Selected locations along major trade routes received express stations: orbital facilities there service and refuel the boats on their communications runs. An arriving boat transmits its recorded messages to the express station, which retransmits them to a departing boat. Time between arrival and departure of boats ranges from seven minutes to almost always less than four hours. This is considerably less than the days most ships would spend refuelling and preparing to jump. Since Imperial xboats are capable of jump-4, that is nearly the theoretical speed of communication. In practice, speed is reduced because trade routes do not follow straight lines and not all jumps made are jump-4. Average speed approximates jump-2.6 per week. Extents: Common name for the area coreward of the Imperium which is occupied by varied, and numerous, Vargr splinter states. (Also called the Vargr Extents.)
