The Vigilant class SDBs were built by a consortium of independent governments on Tirem. As a corrosive atmosphere planet, it was determined that in-atmosphere operations would be minimal, so a streamlined rather than an airframe hull was selected. A laser main battery was considered desirable to avoid the necessity of missile resupply operations during a major invasion of the system. Similar vessels may be found in planetary navies of this tech level throughout the Imperium and beyond.
