The Hummingbird is strictly intended for air to air combat at short ranges. Every attempt was made to keep the aircraft as small and as light as possible. Hummingbirds are typically used as point defense aircraft, maintained in a ground alert status until required, because of their low endurance. Lack of an onboard radar system leaves them dependent on ground intercept controllers, a weakness which can be exploited by an electronically superior adversary.
