---------------------------------------------------------------
The following are a collection of questions I've seen asked
repeatedly on the Calontir Discussion List. No, I'm not the
list administrator. I'm just trying to help. -- Hal

How do I get help? (or words to that effect)
Mail the following message to listserv@crcvms.unl.edu:
help
You will receive a message HELP which lists commands and
settings (requests for information and action) for various
features of Calontir's list server.
How do I subscribe to the Calontir discussion list?
Mail the following message to listserv@crcvms.unl.edu:
subscribe calontir <your_name>
<your_name> being the name you want to appear with
your post to the list. (TD: It would be nice if this was your SCA
name. hint, hint.)
I'm not a university goob. How do I deal with paying for the
downloading of all of this chummy, folksy posts?
OR
My mailer just can't keep up, what do I do?
If you are charged a fee per downloaded letter or
have any other reason to want to reduce the number
of separate posts your mailer has to handle, mail the
the following message to listserv@crcvms.unl.edu:
set calontir digests
The listserver will collect all of the mail it receives
over an unspecified period of time and send the clump
to you as a single letter.
How do I get off of the list (unsubscribe)?
Mail the following message to listserv@crcvms.unl.edu:
signoff calontir
How do I stop my Calontir mail so my mailbox doesn't explode while
I'm off on vacation or something?
Mail the following message to listserv@crcvms.unl.edu:
set calontir nomail
The following message to listserv@crcvms.unl.edu will
restart your Calontir mail feed:
set calontir mail
How do I post?
Mail your posts to CALONTIR@crcvms.unl.edu
Why did everyone see a reply that I intended to be personal?
The list server at UNL sets calontir@crcvms.unl.edu as the
reply address for all posts to the list. So, if you
use the reply feature of your mail reader, your reply
will be sent to the Calontir list instead of just to
the original poster. If you want to reply only to the
original poster, you will need to command you mailer
to send your reply to the originator's address assuming,
of course, you know the originator's address.
Before replying to a message, it is important to check
the headers to see from where the message was sent and
where reply's will be returned.
How do I get a subscriber's address?
Assuming on the off chance that the subscriber in
question does not include an address in his or her
posts, you can possibly learn the address by mailing
the following message to listserv@crcvms.unl.edu:
review calontir
You will receive a message REVIEW CALONTIR that
is a list of the "names" and addresses of subscribers
to the Calontir list. Given that this is an E-mail
environment _and_ an SCA interest group, it is quite
likely that the "name" given in REVIEWCALONTIR
will have little or no bearing on the name that you
know for the individual in question.
I don't see my posts after I send them.
How do I know my posts are getting out?
The listserver doesn't automatically mail your own
posts back to you. If you want to see your posts
just as the rest of the list does, say, to verify
the transmission, then mail the following message
to listserv@crcvms.unl.edu:
set calontir ack
Now, everything you send to calontir@crcvms.unl.edu will
also be sent back to you.
It's quiet out there, I wonder if the list is broken. How can I tell?
If you feel that something is wrong with mailing list,
***don't mail something to the list asking folks
if it's working***, because (a) if it is not working, then they
won't see it; (b) if it is working, then they may not have
your address to reply to.
Sometimes the listserver or some other part
of the system pauses for a while, but it always seems to
catch up. If things seem to have stalled, just wait for 24
hours, go to a movie, attend local SCA activities, call your
parrents (generally _get_a_life_), then check if your getting
Calonet mail again. The best action to take if you
really want to find out if the list is working is to ask a
net.friend (someone besides Hal ;) directly by email, phone,
or in (gasp {Look! Mother! Blood!}) person.
Why are my posts getting all broken up?
Where are these strange characters coming from?
Certain word processors insert non-text codes into
text. First of all, the word processor used to
write posts for the Calontir list must be set to
output ASCII text only. But even then, many
word processors may still insert bad codes.
Choose a word processing system that works best
for you, yet produces clean ASCII. Word Processors
are available that are oriented to the e-mail
environment.
